Spartan Health Sciences University School of Medicine provides a learning environment that enables serious students with the opportunity to acquire medical knowledge, competent skills and a compassionate attitude for the practice of medicine in the broad world community of physicians.
The SHSU – School of Medicine and College of Arts & Sciences has Charter and License received under seal by the Government of St. Lucia since 1982. The University is Recognized and Registered by the Official Regulatory Authority of the Government of St. Lucia i.e. Ministry of Education.
SHSU SOM is accredited by CAAM-HP since May 2013. The Government of St. Lucia through Ministry of Education has introduced a policy whereby all medical schools operating in St. Lucia must have CAAM-HP accreditation. In accordance with this policy, the University has been granted Registration and Recognition by the Ministry of Education in line with CAAM-HP approval of SHSU SOM.
The Governing structure in respect of the administrative functions and processes of the SHSU SOM allows the overall faculty to student’s ratio is 1:10 to provide quality time and accessibility to the faculty by the students.

The third- and fourth- year curriculum consists of eight (08) required Core Clerkships. They are designed to optimize the balance between in-patient and out-patient learning opportunities. The Clinical Science program is taught at various SHSU SOM affiliated hospitals in United States and the Jamaica. The affiliated hospitals are located in large metropolitan communities with enough patient resources.
SHSU SOM provides access to unlimited information on research through Medline, new advancement in health care delivery, biomedical knowledge are key facilities for students entering medical school, to confront a wide range of new information, practices, and issues as they proceed through their education. The Community Health and Research Center of Spartan (CHARCOS), provides greater opportunities / encourages students to get involved in research activities.
The Spartan Biomarkers Club (SBC) is a subsidiary of the CHARCOS and as part of its aims and objectives is to inculcate the culture of research study and presentation in students. The SBC also aims to teach students the skills to evaluate analyze and utilize scientific data and literature as well as build their confidence in public speaking. To provide health education that would enhance healthcare services and patient outcomes, The Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities would include patient-focused programmes, medical research, and provision of relevant education information for medical and other health professions, reading and presentation of authoritative medical/scientific literature.
American Medical Students Association Spartan Chapter organizes various community outreach activities.

The small class size enables gives an opportunity to students have access to the faculty during school hours at fixed times for one on one discussions (Faculty-student interaction). In addition, Faculty is also involved in individual academic support / advice for those students who seem to have difficulty in learning. It is part of the University’s policies not to leave any student behind until all efforts have been exhausted.
The Counselling services at the SHSU SOM provides a multi-layered system of support that provides academic, career and personal guidance and advocates the professional development of each student. SHSU goal is to support all students as they adapt their study skills, test-taking strategies and personal habits to the demands of the medical curriculum.
The academic advisory system of the University is called Mentorship (SMART) Program. Academic counseling is offered through the office of the Dean, Assist. Dean and Course Director while Personal counseling is offered by an independent professional counsellor. Career counseling, selection of elective courses and residency counseling provided by the Clinical Dean, Clinical Chairs and Clinical Director to help the graduates to make their choices and fulfill their dreams of becoming specialists.

FinancialAid Officer at SHSU SOM provides counseling to all medical Students with financial difficulties and in debt management.
SHSU SOM has maintained its promise over the years to keep its tuition at an affordable rate in the Region while maintaining the standard of the medical education program. In addition to low tuition, SHSU also helps students to reduce indebtedness by a number of free services. These services include:
1.Transportation from home to school and back are provided on a daily basis for all students. Students who use the library on weekends are also provided with night transport back to their homes at no extra cost.
2.On-campus health service provided by a local doctor for students and their family members is confidential and free of charge.
3.Academic, Personal and Financial counseling services.
4.Gymnasium and other sports facilities.
In addition to these free services, the University also offers a scholarship upto 40% towards their tuition to International students with higher GPA (3.5 and above / 4.0).
Saint Lucia is generally a peaceful country. City of Vieux Fort, where the school is located, is a very tranquil community. Students live in relatively quiet neighborhoods with minimal distractions which is conducive to studying. The University campus is equipped with adequate facilities for learning.
The library has sufficient space to accommodate 150 students at a time. The library is easily accessible and is open for eighteen (18) hours per day (i.e. 6:00 a.m. – 11:50 p.m.) Monday – Sunday. This provides sufficient hours to meet the needs of both faculty and students. Adjacent to the Library is the students’ rest area and locker facilities. Students are also provided with night transportation after library hours.
